Landlords planning to head overseas over the Christmas break are being warned to stay on the right side of the law.
The Ministry of Building, Innovation and Employment has issued a reminder to property investors that under the Residential Tenancies Act, a landlord who is out of the country for more than 21 consecutive days must appoint a New Zealand-based agent to act for them.
They must all give the tenant the agent’s details, advise the Department of Building and Housing if a bond is held, and let the tenant know when they return.
